The Near - Infrared Galaxy Counts Anomaly : Local Underdensity or Strong Evolution ?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze bright-end (K = 10 − 17) galaxy counts from a number of near-infrared galaxy surveys. All studies available as of mid-1997, considered individually or collectively, show that the observed near-infrared galaxy number counts at low magnitudes are inconsistent with a simple no-evolution model. We examine evolutionary effects and a local underdensity model as possible causes of this effect. We find that the data are fit by either a factor of 1.7-2.4 deficiency of galaxies out to a redshift of z = 0.10-0.23, depending on the k corrections and evolution (e-) corrections used and the adopted values of the Schechter luminosity function parameters, or by unexpectedly strong low redshift evolution in the K-band, leading to (e+k)-corrections at z = 0.5 that are as much as 60% larger than accepted values. The former possibility would imply that the local expansion rate on scales of several hundred Mpc exceeds the global value of H 0 by up to 30% and that the amplitude of very large scale density fluctuations is far larger than expected in any current cosmogonic scenario. The latter possibility would mean that even the apparently most secure aspects of our understanding of galaxy evolution and spectral energy distributions are seriously flawed. Wide-field J- and K-band Galaxy Counts in the Elais Fields
New near-infrared galaxy counts in the J and K bands are presented over a total area of 0.70 and 0.97 degrees2, respectively. The limiting magnitudes of the deepest regions are 19.5 in J and 18.0 in K. At J > 16 and K > 15 our J and K-band counts number counts agree well with existing surveys provided all data are corrected to a common magnitude scale. There are real differences from field to f...
متن کاملEvolution of the galaxy luminosity function at z < 0.3
We measure the redshift-dependent luminosity function and the comoving radial density of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 (SDSS DR1). Both measurements indicate that the apparent number density of bright galaxies increases by a factor≈ 3 as redshift increases from z = 0 to z = 0.3. This result is robust to the assumed cosmology, to the details of the K-correction and to d...
متن کاملEffects of galaxy mergers on the faint IRAS source counts and the background
Binary merging constitutes a complementary mode of galaxy evolution to the canonical hierarchical clustering theory. This merger-driven evolution not only influences the galaxy mass distribution function, but may drive the main galactic activity cycles, such as starbursts and the activity in the nuclei (AGNs). In this paper, we use galaxy aggregation dynamics together with a possible merger-dri...
متن کاملThe Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey: K-band Galaxy Number Counts
We present K-band number counts for the faint galaxies in the Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey (CADIS). We covered 4 CADIS fields, a total area of 0.2 deg, in the broad band filters B, R and K. We detect about 4000 galaxies in the K-band images, with a completeness limit of K = 19.75mag, and derive the K-band galaxy number counts in the range of 14.25 < K < 19.75mag. This is the largest medium de...
متن کاملA Bridge from Optical to Infrared Galaxies: Explaining Local Properties, Predicting Galaxy Counts and the Cosmic Background Radiation
We give an explanation for the origin of various properties observed in local infrared galaxies, and make predictions for galaxy counts and cosmic background radiation (CBR), by a new model extended from that for optical/near-infrared galaxies. Important new characteristics of this study are that (1) mass scale dependence of dust extinction is introduced based on the size-luminosity relation of...
